Shot Blast Cleaning Units - ToolsRUs
Rather than use a chemical mixture, blast cleaning utilizes mechanical force to clean metal or other hard surfaces. These units propel some kind of media or abrasive material at an object at very high speeds. The high velocity and abrasive surface of the media combines to clean, deburr or remove particulate matter from a wide variety of objects. There are all kinds of shot blast cleaning units, from handheld blast guns to large-scale blasting machines. Portable, handheld blasters are good for cleaning pre-installed objects such as piping or concrete structures. Large blasting machines, by constrast, feature containment bays to hold objects to be cleaned or run things through on a conveyor belt.
Tumble, table, cylinder and spinner/hanger blasters are the primary cleaning unit types. Despite their different designs, they basically serve the same purpose. High-speed particles are thrown by the shot blaster at an object to clean it or alter its outer surface. Depending on the machine and the media, this process can be used to roughen, descale, deflash, deburr, texturize or even finish metal goods. Fabricated components including certain auto parts are shot blasted to deburr them and remove the residue caused by welding before they are painted. Blasters can also be used to remove oil, rust, oxidation or other surface contaminants.
Shot blast cleaning units can be built to custom specifications to suit metal components of different size as well as the quantity cleaned at once. Select units feature large compartments designed to hold a certain number of objects at once. Conveyer blasters feature a moving conveyor belt and are good for blasting steel beams or sheets. Table blasters work best for low-volume cleaning, while spinner/hanger blasters work especially well for cleaning irregularly shaped parts.
The media blasted at a high speed over the objects often consists of small, metallic particles. Among these media are steel grit, silicon carbide, wire cuttings, aluminium oxide and metal shot. Sand is another material used as blasting media. These media or abrasives are selected for their appropriateness in blasting a given type of object.

Shot blasting applications are numerous. In the aircraft and automotive industries, among many others, shot blasting is used to clean up fabricated components, strengthen and/or prepare them to be finished. Cement and cast metal forms also undergo the process.
