Reducing Your Energy Bills Significantly With Smart Meters
Reducing Energy Uses
You cannot reduce your electric bill significantly without understanding how much electricity each of the appliances in your home uses. You know that there is a basic correlation between how much energy you use and the cost of your bill each time it arrives. However, accurately determining your power usage depends on how much time you spend using an appliance and how much power that appliance uses.
Time and Wattage in Energy Consumption
It is common knowledge that a simple kettle uses more power than your large refrigerator. An average kettle uses 3 kilowatts. A fridge, depending on how old it is and how it was made, will draw between 150 and 300 watts, which is much less. However, the average household will not be spending more money on running their kettle than they will running their fridge. A kettle is on for only a short period each day, maybe five minutes each time it is turned on, where a fridge is on constantly, all day and every day of the year.
Saying that a kettle uses 3 kilowatts is a tad misleading though. It really uses 3 kilowatts per hour. So, if you use a 3kW kettle for just five minutes in the morning, you would be using 3 x 5/60 = 0.24 kWh. If you just use it once, it will not be very expensive to use. A fridge is measured a little differently. The motor turns itself on and off automatically to keep the temperature just right. We can pretty accurately assume that the motor is running roughly half of the time that the fridge is plugged in. So if you have an energy efficient fridge that uses 150 watts per hour, or 0.15 kW, it would be measured as 0.15 x 24/2 = 1.8 kWh. You would have to you use your kettle seven times each day for it to be using as much electricity as the fridge.
Electronic Time switches Can Reduce Standby Power
If a home appliance is not being used, but is still plugged in and on standby, like video recorders, satellite receivers and TVs, it can consume an alarming amount of home electricity and power. Some equipment needs to be left on standby in order to receive automatic updates. However, none need to be left on standby all night. If you know what time updates are scheduled to be sent, using an electronic time switch you can set up the equipment to be on standby right at that time and to be shut off when the update is complete.
An energy meter is another tool that can cut your electric bill drastically. You use it by plugging your appliances into it and it will give you a reading to show you how much power each of the appliances in your home are using. This will allow you to prioritize which appliance you should be cutting back on. This is an easy way to reduce CO2 emissions and reduce your bill.
