Will using Auralex around my mic block out white noise?
My vocal recordings come out a lil back round noise from my computer and a/c. I don't have much room to work with. Will using a piece of Auralex foam make it quiter? I use Audacity, Samson c01u and pop-filter.
Answer:
You'll probably find a pretty small reduction in noise if any, but it's likely the main problem is that a lot is reflecting around the room, getting into the front of the mic.
You could test this by holding up a pillow or two behind the mic whilst recording (no singing...) then checking the recording after. Bear in mind a bulky pillow will probably have more absorbancy than a "special" foam panel, area-wise.
The samson's pattern (Cardioid) will already be cancelling out a lot of direct sound from behind, which is the main reason why these foam/mesh screens, including the big wrap-around ones, are only effective in specific circumstances - not including noisy rooms.
It might be better to consider an isolation box for the computer, and possibly killing the AC during recording.
Or (and I know no-one likes to hear this after they've bought a condenser, but it's worth considering) - Get a decent dynamic mic. The rejection of these is the best for home/project purposes IMO.
