Comparing Alternative Power Generation
The recent events describing turmoil in the Middle East and portion of Africa where a large quantity of our supply of fuel oils originate have determined once again that our over dependence on traditional electricity generation can be unexpectedly endangered. As traditional power plants rely considerably on oil coming from these regions, troubles there would significantly bear on the cost of generation of electricity, among others.
Of all the viable options so far examined for alternative power sources, only the nuclear power plant can meet both concerns of rapid development and sufficient capacity. Those other alternative sources, whereas already proven, have not totally come to full age as full-scale adequate technologies and cannot guarantee a large-scale solution and are comparatively dearer. For example, a nuclear power plant would require an area very much smaller than solar panels to supply the same power capacity.
The only issue that appears to slow the full-scale development of nuclear power plants is the opposition from the so-called environmentalist group, which, whereas being logical, could rather be considered as out of synch. Those skull-and-bone hazard signs often associated with nuclear energy seem to be taking roots on the innate apprehension of humans, which is truly not very well established. Truly, operating conventional power plants have more hazards to the ecosystem than a nuclear power plant.
Relative to safety, except for the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, no other minor or major nuclear plant has been found to have caused fatalities or damage to the ecosystem. The example of the Chernobyl is more of an exclusion than a rule because of the culture of the then USSR, where the incident was not even divulged until three days later. It was made known later that the plant did not meet international standards, and for the once aloof USSR, we cannot even declare there are adequate workplace safety signs employed there.
Considering all the safety designs proposed for a nuclear power plant, the superfluous containment system as well as the high safety factors afforded, nuclear power plants are truly one of the safest kind of electricity source. This truth is demonstrated by the almost 40 years of operation of commercial nuclear power plants.
The only element that can certainly compromise its safety is human factor, which is admittedly present in all instances of life and not just at nuclear power plants. Naturally no amount of safety warning sign is sufficient if humans purposedly disregard them. Hence, nuclear power plants are so designed so as to completely protect them against human errors or even a series of human mistakes
