Anxiety Wiped Away From Painting Garage Doors
Hardboard garage doors are usually set up from unprimed or primed surfaces. Although the American Hardboard Association offers advice on garage doors that may be old, they also provide information for finishing doors if they've just been bought. There are a number of surface defects that shorten the life of its coating, like knots, raised grains etc, which are not present on the hardboard; making it ideal for coating application. Wood is used to make the hardboard that is used for garage doors. To get a good performance from the hardboard door and the field applied coating in the long run, one must properly coat and maintain it. The coating is not just meant to enhance the look of the door, but also enhance its durability. Hence, such is advised to work in both ways, to lower the hardboard garage door's maintenance and increase its durability.
But, if the following are not followed, you may not be satisfied with the end result. After installation, the unprimed doors need instant finishing, whereas, the primed doors need to be finished after a gap of about 15 days. Make sure to get the kind of paint or stain clearly and specifically intended for exterior use on hardboard from a reputable coatings manufacturer.
It is highly recommended to read through the list of materials used for the paint's production, to figure the product quality. One that offers warranty on the product would be a better buy. Of course the purpose mentioned on the package should be checked to ensure that the right product is being bought. You can use an oil or alkyd primer, which goes well together with the top coat, to seal the face, edges and the back of the whole frame of the door. If the label of a primer, which is neither alkyd nor oil, states that its special formulation is intended for use on hardboard; it may be used. Use a paint which is an acrylic latex, oil base or alkyd base to witness the best results. Textured hardboard can have a stain applied to it; a smooth hardboard should be kept away from it. The results shown by the opaque acrylic latex stains are the most respected. The top of the hardboard should be cleaned using a dry and soft cloth to get rid of any dust, dirt or mildew which may have collected on top of it.
Read the instruction manual and remember what the finish label says about primer requirements, hardwood surface temperature, rate of spread and the application procedure recommended. The thickness of the film on the wood surface should be near about four millimetres when dry.
The prescribed finish label can be very helpful as working at the spread rate mentioned on the back will give the best results. Read on to find out the prescribed number of coats to the outer, inner surfaces as well as the edges of the door. Two un-thinned finish coats follow the primer applied if the door is unprimed and the finishing can be achieved by painting or staining. An alkyd oil primer will be the best hope for spot priming any damaged area. Application of two finish coats should be performed once the primer coats dry.
Good condition of the finish means all that is left is cleaning and touching up on the surface. When the finish becomes badly eroded and thin, clean and prime the areas where the substrate is showing through, followed by complete pruning and finish coating. A finish coating will be all that is required if the substrate is not yet visible through the erosion.
